Stationary 3 Night and/or Progressive Pack Trip Considerations

Said Creek Outfitters is permitted for pack trips on the Shoshone National Forest.  All of our trips are custom created and unique to your group.  We take into consideration the vision of our clients and the projected conditions on the ground to build each experience. We don’t mix groups, so each trip is planned accordingly for your family and friends.  Nor do we work out of a set base camp, which means we are traversing the trails and setting up camp in new locations almost every time we go out.  Our maximum time in one location is 3 nights, but a trip may be extended with prior planning.

Because we do not go to a set location each trip, it takes more horsepower and manpower to support each trip. We like to explore the mountains, and each trip is unique in delivery opportunity for this.  We have the confidence in our horses and staff to be able to do so in a fun and safe manner. Before you book a multi day horseback riding vacations in the back country, there are some things that you should consider.  Back country trips can be transformative for our clients, even for us after all these years. Each and every time. AND we are in Wyoming, one of the most rural states in the lower 48. We are riding horses, hiking, out of cell phone service and generally submerged in nature. Every weather condition imaginable happens here within 5 minutes. And then, you are taking pictures of a golden sunset w/ your jacket tied around your waist.

If the sound of that gives you pause…TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE. We often ask ourselves what we are thinking! Consider trying out a half day or full day horseback ride first before submerging yourself in a backcountry experience.  If you think it sounds totally up your ally and exciting, just what you are looking for, then LETS DO IT!

Sample Pack Trip Itinerary:

Guests are invited to join us at the Lodge at Arcady Ridge Ranch the day prior to the pack trip to meet their horses, be fitted to saddles, and drop off gear.  We will take a short ride around the ranch to get comfortable and make any necessary saddle adjustments, or horse adjustments if necessary.

Day 1: Meet your outfitter at the trailhead and ride into the mountains. You will have ordered lunch when making your initial reservation, and it will be packed prior to departing the trailhead.  Ride to camp (3-5 hours depending on the pre arranged route) stop for lunch along the way.  When you arrive at camp, explore the area while our crew sets up tents and gets the campfire going.  Enjoy a cocktail and appetizers while waiting for your first dinner out under the stars.

Day 2: Coffee and breakfast are served early, and you make a plan for the day. Possibly you are planning to day ride further up into the mountains. Lunch is prepared in camp and packed in saddle bags, along with snacks and supplies for the day.  You may spend the day out exploring via horseback with your guide.  Return to camp in the evening for another meal.

Day 3: Horses are grazing in the pasture in the early morning. You and your guide have already arranged for a later breakfast and a more laid back schedule for this day. Your want to ride up to some high mountain lakes after breakfast and plan to spend the day up there taking pictures and reading a book.  OR maybe today is a travel day and you are up with the sun, getting ready to strike out for another campsite and a few more nights sleeping in the great wide open.

Final Day in Camp: Whether you go on a 4 day trip or longer, the last day in camp is about the same.  Have an early breakfast and gather your belongings in preparation to strike camp.  You and your guide may head out for another riding excursion, while your camp cook and wrangler lead the pack string back to the trailhead.  Plan on ending up back in reality mid to late afternoon. Just in time for happy hour at the Rustic Pine!

Pre-Ride Checklist

Day Rides

We want you to have the best time on your ride, and that requires a little bit of preparation on your part. Below are some things you will need in order to spend time out on the trail:

  • Appropriate Clothing
    • Jeans or riding tights
    • Long sleeve shirt
    • Boots with a heel either cowboy or hiking w/ slim toe (appropriate for both riding and walking)
    • Sun Glasses (well fitted)
    • Hat (well fitted and/or with buckaroo strap)
    • Layers (include a rain layer)

Wear comfortable clothing, but try to avoid loose layers, flowing scarves, jewelry or non-essential items that could catch on the saddle horn, snag on a branch, or fall off while riding. When a rider needs to take off or put on layers, please ask your guide so that he or she can stop the ride. You will then dismount before taking off or putting on layers of clothing. Some clients ask us about saddle pads for longer rides. If this is a consideration, please wear a pair of padded bike shorts under neath pants for longer rides.

  • Helmets

Helmets are highly recommended and made available to guests upon arrival. Please be aware that barrettes, hair extensions, large scrunchies, etc will be uncomfortable beneath a helmet and you should consider removing before the ride.

  • Self-Care
    • Full Water Bottle (hydrate as much as possible prior to the ride and during breaks in riding)
    • Sunscreen/Bug Spray (Please apply prior to the start of the ride)
    • Epi Pen/Personal Medication (bring along medication that you may need during the course of the day)
  • Cell Phone/Camera

Cell phones are incredibly distracting for horses, riders, and guides. Cell phones must be placed in off or airplane mode prior to the start of the ride. Guests are not permitted to use cameras/cell phones while riding and must wait until they are dismounted and their horse is safely secured prior to cell phone/camera use.

  • Snack

Snacks and lunch are provided for guests participating in half and full day rides. Guests participating in shorter rides are still encouraged to bring their own snack (granola bar/trail mix). Always bring water!

Overnight Pack Trip

Each guest is permitted 1 duffle bag on the trip. The maximum weight of this bag is 50 lbs. A clothing and gear checklist will be sent prior to the trip to guide your preparations.

If cancellation occurs 45 days, or less, prior to the scheduled start date of the trip, clients will receive no refund. Please consider purchasing travel insurance when booking a pack trip.
